Published in 2011. A YA fantasy novel. This is the first of three books in the Beyonders Series.
Jason Walker is a normal teenager living in Colorado. He has a part-time job at the zoo, cleaning the hippo exhibit. One day as he’s sweeping, he hears music and looks over the railing, only to fall into the mouth of the hippo. To his surprise, he ends up in another world called Lyria where he meets Rachel, another Beyonder, and their journey begins.
While I enjoyed the story overall, there were a few leaps of faith I had to make. First, most thirteen-year-olds aren’t allowed to work. While this could have been a volunteer position, the author didn’t say. Second, Jason takes on a quest for no apparent reason. He wants to find a way home but is sidetracked by a mission to kill the wizard emperor by finding all the syllables in a word that will kill him. Third, most thirteen-year-old males would not have been able to carry out this mission. Nevertheless, I simply accepted it and moved on with the story.
The first book definitely ends with a cliffhanger and if I ever find the next two books, I’ll be interested in finding out what happens. The author writes well and the story moves along at a fast pace. If you like pure fantasy, this book may suit you.
