The Real "Green Book" Started as a Guide to New York City

'The movie Green Book has generated controversy over its accuracy and treatment of race. In her new documentary The Green Book: Guide to Freedom, director Yoruba Richen sheds light on the real book that inspired the movie — and how it allowed black families to navigate the U.S. safely. It listed places that served black patrons all over the country and the world, and it started right here in New York City with a postal worker named Victor Green.  "I want people to really feel what it was like to be African-Americans and travel these roads in the U.S. during that time," Richen said. "But I also want them to understand that despite the dangers and the potential threats of violence, that African-Americans built community through the Green Book".' -- WNYC News
