The Quarantine Station

Ahead of The Quarantine Station's release tomorrow (March 6th), I wanted to share with you a short piece I'd written for the Australian Romance Reader's Association.

The Quarantine Station by Michelle Montebello

I’d been toying with the idea of writing this book for a while, long before I started putting words to paper. The Quarantine Station, on Sydney’s North Head, has always been a place of intrigue for me. I’d been on the ghost tours (which are very spooky by the way!) and loved the dark stories of the sick coming ashore to be quarantined.

But it wasn’t until I completed one of their historical day tours that I began to peel back the layers of this captivating place to reveal the potential for a love story. While the medical history of the station is fascinating, I wanted the story to convey endurance and hope, to show us the lengths people will go to when in love. I wanted this book to remain true to the history while still being the kind of fictional romance we can all escape into.

Emma and Rose are two very different women who share a complex and unique history. I hope their stories, and the time and place of this novel, whisk you far beyond the pages, into a life on the Quarantine Station.
