I worry that in the afterlife all the historical figures I’ve ever written about will come to me and tell me how I got them wrong.

A bit off topic, but perhaps that's where the idea of haunting came from - the subconscious fallout from thinking of someone incorrectly. That would at least explain the 'unfinished business' thing.
