REVIEW: Schindler’s List
[image error]How I reached the age I am now without ever seeing the whole of this film has long been a mystery. However, for National Holocaust Memorial Day they screened it at my local cinema so I gritted my teeth, packed my hankies, and went along. Not to have taken the trouble to go would have felt like ignoring one of the worst atrocities of recent history.
It’s just as good as everyone has always told me. Harrowing, but excellent. Though, unexpectedly, less harrowing than ‘The Pianist’–it actually brings the full horror of the Holocaust home in a way that’s a little easier to handle.
The famous use of black & white vs. colour is indeed highly effective, and the scene where the train is misrouted redefines ‘edge of the seat moment’. Particularly satisfying is the character arch of the main character, with the real character growth he experiences throughout, which gives the film added depth and makes it very satisfying as a film, as well as a fictionalisation of real events.
Incredibly moving, especially the final few scenes, but not one I could watch regularly because it’s just too intense. However, essential viewing for absolutely anyone old enough to handle it.
