Dear Author,
I was going to be harsh in this review. I was going to tell you how sloppily you built your world, where a people has been enslaved for 500 years straight and still hasn't been absorbed into normal society or died out from too many raids. I was going to tell you the Augurs are too powerful to allow for a story.
But the story pulled me in. Laia's fear and Elias' anguish, the Commandant's brutal hate and the Augurs' inscrutable omniscience kept me awake. The stage, however crude and cobbled-together, was enough for your supreme actors to play on.
I'm looking forward to reading the second book, A Torch aginst the Night.
Yours sincerely
Christina Widmann de Fran
