still beating
behind its bonecage
bruised
like the serpent’s head
cowering instead—
an injured muscle
I failed to protect
bruised
unlike yours
from the unsyncopated
thunking of 107 billion
people in time—
beneath vibrancy
blue flesh
contrite
spirit kneeling
hands form a bowl
begging,
open for
grace
like medicine
down throat
coats—
binding cracks, healing slices
forming membrane
over rawness
saving this
broken
offering for you,
Only One
safe to trust while
it still beats
behind its bonecage
