My Fave Reads of 2018

My Fave Reads of 2018

I always like seeing what my favorite authors are reading, and I figured my readers might enjoy knowing the kinds of books that stood out to me in 2018. I read pretty widely, although I’ve focused more on cozy mysteries this year, since I’m currently writing book three of a 3-book cozy series that’ll start releasing in June 2019 (the first is Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass, and you can preorder it for only $3.99/Kindle here).

If you want to see a complete listing of all the books I’ve read this year, please be sure to follow me on Goodreads here. There are SO many great books out there. I’m just going to weed it down to my very top reads in the categories I did read this year.

The number one book that stood out in my mind this year was The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. Very few books tick all the boxes of things I like to read about (roughing it in a snowy place like Alaska, strong female protagonist, family relationships), but this one surely did.

Werner Heather wrote: "**Now it’s YOUR turn! Tell me what your THREE FAVORITE BOOKS of 2018 were and why!***"

I wanted to wait until after the end of the year to answer this, since one book I was reading pretty much came right down to the wire as to whether I'd finish it in 2018. But I pretty much already knew, back in December, what my answers would be! (I'm assuming the question refers to all the books we actually read in 2018, not just books that happened to be published that year.)

1. My top favorite for the year was The Deerslayer (The Leatherstocking Tales, #1) by James Fenimore Cooper The Deerslayer, the last of the novels in James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales series to be written (though in the internal chronology of the series protagonist's life, it takes place first). Finally finishing up the series (I started reading it in grade school!) has given me a much greater appreciation of Cooper as a writer; and I think this nuanced, substantial novel is the crown of the series, and quite possibly Cooper's masterpiece.

2. On the whole, I don't read much Holocaust fiction (I'm put off by the ultra-grim subject matter). However, Lois Lowry's novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry Number the Stars is more upbeat than most books in this category, and a profoundly inspiring read that easily claims the number 2 slot.

3. It's rare for me to rank a nonfiction book as a top favorite read of the year, or to rate one at five stars, as I did Eric Metaxes' biography Bonhoeffer Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. But this year, that one earns third place. It's a meaty and detailed biography, by a Christian writer who takes seriously Bonhoeffer's profound Christian convictions, which led to his martyrdom; but more than that, it challenges us to truly live out those convictions in what's still a world of tyranny and injustice.

Heather Gilbert I just saw this response! My children read Number the Stars when I was homeschooling them. I have the Bonhoeffer book and NEED to read it! And my husband loves The Deerslayer. I need to read that sometime, as well. Glad you found some new faves in 2018! I'm already finding some good reads in 2019, although I haven't had as much time to read as I did last year.

Werner Heather, good to hear from you! I can relate to having limited time for reading; but I hope you're able to get in some quality reading in 2019.

Wade 1) Charles Martin: Long Way Gone...Charles Martin is both such a great writer and storyteller and this one is chocked full of emotions from beginning to end. He has quickly become one of my favorite writers!

2) D.L. Wood: Unintended Witness...the second book in a series, D.L. Wood does an amazing job with characters, scenery, and action packed sequences!

3) Jaime Jo Wright: The Curse Of Misty Wayfair...This book blew me away with a story about the past and present and how they all collide together. Jaime Jo Wright tackles some hard subjects such as mental illness and does so in a respectful way. Great from start to end.

Honorable Mention:
Karin Kaufman: Death Of A Dead Man...wonderful start to a highly enjoyable series that I think I began reading based on your review!

Heather Gilbert Hi, Wade! Nice to see people are actually answering this question! ;) I loved Charles Martin's The Mountain Between Us (book, not so much the movie). I haven't read DL Wood, but her book looks interesting! I'm getting Jaime's book soon, and I love that she's very out-of-the-box for Christian fiction and a bit darker, yet her stories end on a hopeful note. And Karin--YES! I love her Anna Denning series best of all, I think (paranormal Christian mysteries set in CO), but every one of her books is a gem. She's such a talented author, and I'm honored she's my friend! Hope you find lots of new great books in 2019...maybe you'd enjoy my first cozy mystery, Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass, since it looks like you veer toward mystery/suspense! That one releases in June this year. I hope to see and share the cover art for it soon.

Wade I am definitely going to read your first cozy! And I have your A Murder In The Mountains series on my wish list...just need to carve out some time where I can read them all without reading anything else in between. Best of luck on your new cozy series!

message 7: by Heather (new)

Heather Gilbert Thanks so much. I hope you enjoy both series--the Belinda cozies will release in pretty quick succession, so that'll be nice for readers, I think. I'm pretty excited about the books. And I have at least one more I need to write in the Murder in the Mountains series, as well. Thanks!

Wade Heather, I LOVED Miranda Warning! Wow! It was amazing. I reviewed the book on here, Amazon, and my blog. Wish the rest of your series was on Kindle Unlimited...oh well, I guess I'll just have to buy them all! :)

Heather Gilbert Thanks so much! They were on KU, but didn’t perform as well there, so I opted to put them back on Nook, etc. I’m glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for taking time to review!
