Why limit yourself when the world has no limits?

A friend of mine recently asked me why I didn't stick to one topic/genre of writing.
At first, I thought the question was absurd, then I realized she was just falling into the same mentality of society - the one where we fit into one category and should never sway.
From early on, we are conditioned to live or think within certain constraints. We follow the same beliefs as family, friends, coworkers. IF we say we are republican or democrat, then we're only supposed to follow their framework. The same can be said for religion.
Here's the thing... I disagree completely.
I don't believe in boundaries... I don't exist to just fit in and follow.
Being creative doesn't mean creating one thing. It means endless visions, endless dreams, and endless stories to tell. I want to reach everyone with my words - so that means conformity doesn't work.
The world makes it possible to reinvent yourself as an author over and over again. That's what I want to do. My whole life I've been afraid to put myself out there and take a risk. Then my mom got sick and I decided life was fragile. Deciding to take the leap - I put myself out there and wrote my first book. Was it easy? No - and at best it's mediocre work. BUT I don't care - as I continue to push myself, my craft will improve with perseverance.
If you never take a chance - you'll never be more than you are.
So I asked this question to her, Why limit yourself when the world has no limits?
Only you can place limits on your life and beliefs.
And that's just plain dumb.
So if you're a new writer - or an old one... don't get stuck in the confines of one genre. Take a chance and try something new... Write something unique, out of character for you, and see where it takes you. Remember fiction lets you be whoever, whatever you want. Reality doesn't apply - bend the rules and create something spectacular.
Do you think NASA thought going to the moon was all they'd ever accomplish? No - that was just their starting point for discovering the unknown and pushing boundaries.
The way I look at it...
You can either stay safely on the ground... or take a chance and find yourself among the stars.
