Why You Shouldn’t Set Goals January 1st

Go ahead, picture it: it’s January 1, 2019.

Maybe you’ve just returned from traveling, celebrating the holidays with family. Maybe you’ve been on the go nonstop, entertaining and hosting visiting relatives or your own kiddos, who are home on school break. Maybe you’ve got the sniffles (my household always seems to come down with something this week!).

You’re likely feeling tired, and a little letdown from the build-up to and then excitement of Christmas. But still, there’s a definite flicker of hope inside you — after all, a whole year is ahead of you, and this is the very first day! The possibilities are endless!

And so you sit down and scratch out a few resolutions, because you’re fired up and know you need to make some changes and these ones sound really good right about now:

— Cut out the sugar (because you ate a few too many cookies in December).

— Be nicer to your Mom (because you may have been a little impatient after her third question about when you’re going to get married, have kids, or do something else on her agenda).

— Save more money (because you went a little overboard on the gifts this year).

And so it goes. Here’s the thing: these goals might be exactly where your focus needs to be. Maybe you DO need to eat more leafy greens, grow in patience, or follow a budget.

Or maybe not.

The thing is, it’s really hard to set goals that matter to you when you rush to throw them together in a day, ESPECIALLY when that day is January 1 and you’re feeling all the pressure the world can throw at you to make some – ANY – New Year’s resolutions. Over here, we call that microwaving your goals, and it just can’t compare to homemade, freshly-prepared goals made with love
