Everyone Has A Story....What Is Yours?
Many years ago, the legendary investor, Peter Lynch, advised individual investors to buy what they know when discussing stock picks. Well, since the rise of the Internet as well as the increase in investment funds, many professionals see that view as being somewhat antiquated. Maybe, maybe not, but relying on your own knowledge certainly continues to have merit in many arenas of life. What better area to use your experience than in the creative realm of writing?
You want to write, but you do not know where to begin. What do I mean when I and many others suggest, “Write what you know?” Well, everyone has a story. What is yours? Please do not say you don’t have one. In fact, if you believe that, close your eyes, take a trip down memory lane and then stop at a salient point in time. Perhaps, it was positive. Maybe, it was not. Either way, it is memorable and may be the genesis for a story to be told. Next, sit in front of that pad of paper or blank computer screen and watch what happens!
Go ahead and write a few words or maybe a sentence. You might even write a paragraph or two. Whatever you do, something is bound to reveal itself. It may be in a very rudimentary form, but so what? You are giving voice to a story through the magic of writing. As soon as you write one word, you are beginning the process. Going forward you might alter the words, one of your sentences or paragraphs, but if it is a story which needs to be told, do not relinquish. Tenacity which I discuss in my book is the main ingredient for success of anything.
Refinement upon refinement may be in order, but again, nothing will evolve unless you take the first step by thinking and then writing. If your story is a positive one, why not share your message with others. If it is not, could it be therapeutic to put it into the written word? Your story could be nonfiction and the beginning of a memoir, or if you prefer, cloak it with a fictional account where only you know the truth.
Whatever you decide, do not allow anything or anyone to derail you. Fear of rejection along with premature surrender are often the culprits of defeat. Nothing ventured nothing gained could not be more accurate, and doing nothing gets you, well, nothing. Why not try? Don't forget, a clump of clay will stay that way without the masterly skill of the sculptor’s hands. If you have little time, do it in small steps which will grow to a larger leap of work.
Finally, if you think your writing is rusty, remember, writing is a skill. Yes, some gifts are evidenced earlier in life. Do not forget, however, others do not taste their talent until an older age. Do some research on some of those writers who did not begin their creative journey until the later chapters of their book of life. You will be pleasantly surpised.
Have I convinced you? Are you ready to tell your story? If so, give it a try. As you do, notice what unfolds! Something will, and oh, how sweet it will be...
