received this book, 'Blessed Are the Merciful' by Joyce Shaughnessy as a winner on First Reads. Also based on real people, the story is told through fictional characters.

It is a war romance story from World War II, in the 1940's. The setting is the war in the Pacific, specifically the American involvement in the Philippines. There, the American soldiers were ill-prepared for the atrocities they faced.

Grabbed my interest from the first chapter. I could empathize with the characters. I had a hard time putting it down because I needed to know what was going to happen. I would recommend this book to others! ...more
