What Once Upon A Time Taught Me About Series Writing

Happy Saturday, Soul Questers!

Today I’m doing something really, really exciting!

I am going to be talking about one of my favorite TV Shows, AND Books at the same time!!

I really LOVE ABC’s show, Once Upon A Time! It’s a guilty pleasure for me. I can’t help loving all the characters and the plots and the different directions it goes in. It honestly made me really want to take the time and list all the different things I’ve taken into account for my writing after watching (and rewatching) the series.

So, that’s what we’re going to do today! Here are the 5 things I learned about writing a series after watching Once Upon A Time!

All Magic Comes With A Price!–The iconic quote when fans think of OUAT. It actually holds a good chunk of advice in it. This can be applied to stand alone novels, as well as series, but I knew I couldn’t write a post about OUAT themed writing advice without mentioning it. If you’re writing any sort of magic in your stories, remember that your magic should cost something for its users. We see this repeatedly throughout the show. No one can wield magic without sacrificing something in return. Maybe that price is a life, or health or even personal freedom. Without diving into spoilers, I will say that at the end of my own novel, Show Me, Kade faces the price of using his magic prematurely.
Foreshadowing, Foreshadowing, Foreshadowing–OUAT is the queen of foreshadowing. Dare I say the Evil Queen of Foreshadowing?
