If the fight against poverty isn't coupled with lowering the environmental impact of such measures, the increase of the buying power of the people lifted from extreme poverty will only represent a further strain on an already changing climate.

Let’s keep people poor and distitute so that the few living in developed countries can plunder the earth.
Clearly you’ve never lived in poverty for any extended period of time. And no, it isn’t the poor or developing countries that are plundering the environment. It is the few of us that are living in luxury and posting to goodreads from our cell phones.

Right. You do realize that those of us that currently live or have lived in developing countries are used to the environmental crises (created by the west) be inserted into the convo anytime the conversation is about uplifting the poor. Perhaps those that have plundered the environment can fix it while the poor focus on feeding, clothing, and housing themselves with a little bit of dignity to spare.
First of all, climate change is everyone's business. New Delhi can testify to that because there is hardly any "westerner" there if it isn't obvious and secondly, all I said is that there is a need for a sustainable change otherwise Beijing could be another good example. The uplifting of the poor and the care for climate change are not mutually exclusive.
Mr. Gates seems to be doing a lot of things right here these days. I not only enjoy his book recommendations, but he truly is out in front of things leading the pack.
Great learnings this year! I appreciate that as a family of four achieves $20k/year, birth rates decline drastically and education and health rises exponentially.
As we increase equality for women with education (not marriage), asset-building/entrepreneuring, and health, the extreme poverty in Nigeria will soon be a sad memory.
