The Reference Book Sold in All Bookstores:
Remember reading books by Kahlil Gibran, in school? And if not in school, perhaps you just found his books without any help and decided they were good reading? Yes, Gibran was a great author. And we all love books by great authors. And a book packed with wisdom was an added plus.
And so, I offer some writings below from a book of wisdom.
Though I will quote something from a very important reference book, this article is, in no way, a book review, but more so just a comment, opinion and idea about some sentences that I did read in this very important book.
I have a book in my home which I have already read, and not once, but probably ten times. How can anyone want to read a book ten times? Over the past twenty years, I have read parts of this book at least ten times.
This book is packed with knowledge, inspiration, with facts, with ideas, with guidelines for life and with all sorts of stories of great historical individuals and groups. It just might be the book of the decades.
And so the quote today, under the ruling of fair use, is a little, rather long quote, but a very important one. First, here is the quote and after the quote, my own comments:
And, I quote:
My children, listen and I will teach you the circumstances when it is proper to be ashamed. Sometimes it is entirely out of place.
Before your parents, be ashamed of immoral behavior. Before a ruler or important person, be ashamed of a lie, Before a judge, be ashamed of criminal behavior, Before a public assembly, be ashamed of breaking the law.
Before a friend or partner, be ashamed of dishonesty.
Before your neighbors, be ashamed of theft.
Be ashamed of breaking a promise, of leaning on the dinner table with your elbows,
Of stinginess when you are asked for something,
Of not returning a greeting,
Of staring at a prostitute,
Of turning down a relative’s request,
Of depriving someone of what is rightly his,
Of staring at another man’s wife,
Of playing around with his slave woman,
Of insulting your friends,
Of following up your gifts with criticism,
Of betraying secrets. These are times when it is proper for you to be ashamed, and people will respect you for it.
My Own Comments:
That is a direct quote from a very important historical book, a wonderful work of literature, and a most necessary reference book, called, The Holy Bible. That quote is directly from the Good News Bible with Deuterocanicals/Apocrypha – Today’s English Version.
So, what are you ashamed of -if anything?
Always Something New!
If you read the Bible, daily, or weekly, you will always find something new, or something old, or something that you have long forgotten. There are the usual quotes that almost everyone remembers, such as John 3:16, but there is more to the Bible than the famous quotes that we see posted all over. And to get to that more, we need to read the Bible on a regular basis. And it is in reading it on a regular basis that we discover and re-discover some of the most important information, ideas, quotes and suggestions that will make a big difference in our lives.
Have you read the Bible today?
