THE ISLAND OF TERROR

Thirty years ago this weekend, I was on Lundy Island for a mate's 30th Birthday. We had a great time in the wee local bar, appeared on Channel 4 who were there at the time with us pretending, stiffly, to be locals, and stayed in a converted lighthouse set next to a burial ground and a neolithic chambered tomb. Much fun was had negotiating a piss off the top of the lighthouse while drunk after midnight, and dealing with the wailing banshee that lived in the stairwell.

That lighthouse stayed with me, and appeared more than ten years later in Island Life, although I transported it to the Hebrides for that one. It also features large in THE ISLAND OF TERROR, as Challenger is led to Lundy, where the British Army are trying to develop a new form of attack troops.

Jim Dooley I’ve been a huge fan of Professor Challenger since childhood, so this immediately drew my attention and I placed my order. One word of advice in searching for it on Amazon. If you type in “The Island of Terror” in the “Books” department, you’ll eventually get there. I would have arrived sooner, though, if I’d typed in “Professor Challenger.” ... One day, maybe even I will learn how to search online!
