10/6/18 - My Hiatus and Return
Welcome to the WymerNovels blog. Today, I will be discussing my hiatus of 21 years and what inspired me to return to writing.
In the late 80s, I wrote the Lightyears Trilogy and in the early 90s, I wrote Treasures From Afar. Of course from 2016 to 2018, I revised them to a whole new level and then self-published them. But why did I stop writing for 21 years?
In 1993, I tried to get Treasures From Afar published, but the company I submitted it to, Vantage Press, wanted $11,000 to publish it and then they would have sent me a skid of books that I would have had to try and sell. That was not going to happen. It’s a good thing too, because they had been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay $3.5 million to 2,200 authors they had defrauded. They ceased operations in 2012. I was hopeful, and kept trying to submit it to other traditional publishers, but was rejected. One day in 1995, I was sitting in my office, going through some minor edits in Treasures From Afar when my wife called me to dinner. I closed the cover of my manuscript and it remained closed for 21 years. I gave up. We were starting a family and I had just co-founded a band called Pummeled About The Face. So, I was very busy with life.
It was always in the back of my mind to get my books published. With the advent of ebooks, a host of self-publishing companies, global distribution, and much more affordable pricing, it was now something that I could actually achieve, unlike before. But life was still busy…or was it? Was that just an excuse? One evening, I was watching TV with my wife and Steve Harvey was on, giving a motivational speech about taking a chance and jumping off the cliff with faith in your God-given gifts. That is the one and only thing that pushed me to return and continue to write as well as revise, edit, and self-publish the books that I had already written. It is actually a dream come true. Steve Harvey's speech meant so much to me that I would like to share it with you. Thank you, Steve Harvey.
