The Secret, by Jessica Edwards is nothing like the cover image offers. Yes, there some blind following here, that strikes you from the very beginning and you can't quite understand where the tale is going, but there's a great deal more to this story. The Secret, like an onion, is layer upon layer of... secrets!

OhMaggie is a young woman filled with dedication to a ghost. Not literally of course, but her father's not been with the family in ten years. His presence is still felt, as he sends money, religiously to support his daughter and model of a Korean wife. But he come home? Why?
In his absence, he instructs Maggie to take particular lessons. Lessons mostly in language and self-defense. She doesn't know why, but she always does what she's supposed to do. It's not until three young men come into her life, not until she witnesses an incident she wishes she'd never seen take place. She's then forced into a world that leaves her breathless in both wonderment and violence. This is The Secret.
The first few chapters of this book left me thinking I wouldn't finish it. The personality of Maggie was not very likable from the start. The characters were stated to be attending university but I truly believe it was more like high school. The behaviors for all, except the gal who slept with her teacher, seemed more robotic than youthful. But then the action began and I grew interested.
I believe what threw me off with reading The Secret was the actual writing. Though many YA readers would probably overlook it, I felt there was way to much inner banter. She talked to herself and questioned everything So Much she made me weary! Eventually she tapered off, providing a fresh enough tale for me to finish rather quickly. I did run into many errors though. The story needs to be re-edited to smooth things out.
I must also ward you, this book is not a simple thriller of a youth novel. The Secret carries sexual situations. Violent sexual situations. It's not for the faint of heart. There is romance, but think more like (I've never read them, by the way) along the lines of fifty shadish stuff. But... You'll have to gauge it yourself.
If you're looking for a YA mafia tale, this could be the one. Or it could not. It all depends on how rough you like your romance/sex. Edwards has a story but it's not what you think. Oh, and another book following the cliffhanger of an ending. I'm off to the next read. Cheer!
