Eighteen years ago I lost a boy I loved to suicide. And he left me a song. In 2013, I sat down to write the story of him and us, and that song wove its way into the pages. At first I called the book “You Make Me Lovely,” but later it became “All the Bright Places.” In honor of that boy and Theodore Finch, and in honor of every person struggling in silence, please open your hearts to those around you. Listen. Love. Reach out. Speak up. Ask for help. Offer help. Be a bright place. And remember that no matter how dark you may feel, you are a bright place too.
