DESCRIPTION:
Based on true events, Davida is the story of unconditional love between Davida Johnson Clark (aka Albertina Hultgren) and renowned American sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was a forbidden love that survived twenty-five years, until his untimely death. She was the ethereal woman; he was strength and exuberance.
Augustus was not willing to risk losing his growing reputation and recognition of his art by seeking a divorce from his wife. Davida was willing to be his mistress and raise their only child basically on her own with mainly financial help from him.
His most famous sculptures are of General Sherman in Central Park, the Shaw Memorial in Boston Commons, the Standing Lincoln in Chicago, and the 20-dollar gold coin. She was his model for the Amor Caritas (in Paris and New York City), the Cornelius Vanderbilt mantle, the weathervane Diana above Madison Square Gardens, and the James Garfield monument.
EXCERPT:
Gus often draped a muslin cloth over me, working the fold until they were perfect. He wrapped a garland of flowers around my waist and set a wreath of flowers atop my hair, which was parted in the middle and gently swept to each side in waves. As he instructed, I stretched my arms above my head and turned my head slightly down and to the right.
Once completed a year later, the angel stood in a hollow niched with her arms stretched high above her head, holding a tablet. Her wings curved upward, and she wore a flowing gown that barely covered her feet. On her head was a crown of flowers, and a garland of flowers was around her waist. Her facial expression was one of love, peace, and harmony.
This was the start of a long, meaningful, and special journey we shared. When completed in 1898, the piece would be called Amor Carita."
Tagline:
True love never runs smooth
SHORT EXTRACT:
I did not want to do anything to jeopardize his career or reputation
Gus led me to where the three statues were standing. It was my first time to see themI was astonished to see my face looking back at me from three different angels.
Though Gus was gone, he was still quite alive in my heart. I wrote down my fondest memories of our days together, hoping someday Louis would read them and come to understand his father more.

She has received two awards for Davida.
