June 25: Happiness is learning the Wiradjuri language through hula hoops

I have almost every single published resource available on the Wiradjuri language as I try to learn (very slowly) how to string a sentence together. It’s not easy. Actually, it’s very complicated, and it will probably take me a decade to get the accent right, but I am determined to keep trying.

As part of my learning, it seems that some of the most effective learning strategies  are those where we are ‘acting’ the language out in class with other students and committed, very patient tutors. Thanks Uncle Stan, Letetia, Yarri and Lloyd!

I was a bit nervous when I saw hula hoops in the classroom today though, I was never very good at the hula as a child, but using them as props to learn language, well that was another thing. Brilliant use of the huge round plastic hoops, I must say.

And I can say, I was pretty happy with the language exercise.
