Quite a few friends have been upset I shared this recent article by Alex Pearlman which bashes #transhumanism, myself, and others. I'd like to say a few things about the transhumanism movement, which I have dedicated many years of my life to promoting now. First, in order for movements to grow in culture and especially credibility, they need critics. Additionally, we should be thankful we have some female critics like Pearlman, since transhumanism is annoyingly an overwhelmingly male movement. Two: Modern transhumanism as a social movement has largely been born upon the back of heavy criticism in media, often from the Christian Right. So it's nice to see critics attack transhumanism from a political and philosophical point of view, rather than religion. The naysayers are broadening, and that shows transhumanism is growing. Three: This article is news even if it's just an opinion piece, which is why it made the front page of Medium, now one of the world's more popular sites. (image below of Medium retweeting my tweet to their 2.3 million followers). In short, transhumanism grows from moments like this. Finally, transhumanism is a decentralized big tent movement, capable of holding hundreds of millions of people in it, including lots and lots of critics and people on nearly opposite sides of the spectrum. I don't agree with the critics, but they are a part of this historical journey to becoming a #transhuman species.
