Thank you so much for this lovely message - it's responses like this that make writing worthwhile! It was a book that covered a lot of things I really care about, and indulged my own love of Van Gogh! I'm so glad you like it - I love how the act of writing/reading is like a psychic exchange from my head to yours, then you add extra layers from your lives to make the book your own. Magic!
Best wishes

We are also passionate about social justice and have spoken out against terrorism. I ended up receiving sunflower seeds from the Malaysian Airlines MH17 crash site in the Ukraine and that's extended my connection with the sunflower.

Normally, I would've written about the recent massacre in Christchurch and expressed our condolences, especially as my husband and I were there on our honeymoon just after 9/11. However, it struck too deep and I couldn't find the words.
Best wishes,

Yes, Singing Home the Whale would be suitable. And if Amelia's able to handle a bit of swearing, she might be interested in The Nature of Ash and it's sequel Ash Arising which is set in a slightly more future NZ and looks at political corruption, terrorism and resource wars. The Blood of the Lamb series would also be fine, though hints at some sexual violence. The second book also borrows from Australian offshore detention camps, so may be topical.
I haven't written about Christchurch either. I felt like another 'white' voice speaking from the outside wasn't appropriate at that time. It equally breaks my heart and enrages me!

Being incredibly inspired as feeling a connection to Vincent Van Gogh, I ordered Dear Vincent sight unseen and absolutely loved it. I underline and write in books and the better the book, the more scribble.
Last year, I passed it onto my then 12 year old daughter who keeps reading and re-reading it and carries it around with her. She was mad about Harry Potter, but she quite clearly calls "Dear Vincent" her favourite book.
I pinched it from her tonight so I had something to read on the train home, and am appreciating it all over again. It's absolutely exquisite. Ironically, we'd been into the Art Gallery of NSW where we'd been to see the HSC Art exhibition, Art Express. It tied in perfectly with the book.
Anyway, I said to her that we had to write to you and let you know how much we love this book.
Best wishes,
Rowena and Amelia Newton
