Will Elder Weekends: Dragged Net!

For their spoof of "Dragnet," Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder went to the well twice. The first time, the characters looked nothing like Jack Webb and Co., but the rhythms of the iconic cop show were definitely there. I'm betting it was based on the radio show.
But for the second spoof, shown above, Elder is obviously drawing Jack Webb -- albeit a goofier Jack Webb than the actual version. I've always loved these two panels, mostly for the insane glee with which Joe Friday and his partner smoke those cigarettes. Friday's face in the second panel, with four cigarettes in his mouth, one in his ear and a few in his hand, never fails to crack me up.
