My fourth book comes out in less than two months. I should have it figured out then, yeah? It should be a matter of picking up my routine and following a set pattern. And while some things are easier to tackle now than with SNOW LIKE ASHES, I’m continually amazed by how new so much of this process feels—how overwhelming, how hopeless, how beyond me.

I made some decisions this week that should help me find a balance (and undo some of these awful, tar-like feelings of incompetence). The fact that it took me this long to make those decisions has added a layer of exasperation to my churning emotions. But this job is a constantly evolving beast of our hearts and minds and souls—no matter where you are at in the process, be willing to learn and adapt. Be gentle with yourself. The road is long, the journey hard—our goal is longevity, and longevity takes persistence and patience.
