Judging a Book By Its Cover

Over at Inkspot today, the blog for Midnight Ink authors, I posted an article about my Midnight Ink book covers and how I've been able to influence their design. Cover art is very, very important in marketing a book, so I, like most authors, tend to obsess over them just a wee bit. ;-) Please read the post and let me know what you think about the topic in the comments.

Tricia Douglas I, too, agree that cover art is important for the general public seaching out a new book. But if I'm familiar with an author and will read withever he/she wrote, I would buy the book with a blank cover! Definitely, a new or newer author, should be concerned with how the book presents itself. Silly in this day and age when we try not to be influenced by what someone/something looks like, but unfortunately something that still needs to be considered when you're just getting to know the public.

Beth Thanks, Tricia, for your thoughtful comment. Yes, eventually the book cover becomes less important once an author's names becomes commonplace. I'd love to be in that situation eventually!

Tricia Douglas I'm almost done with To Hell in a Handbasket. Am enjoying it very much and feel like Judy the daughter is just like mine!

Beth Thanks, Tricia! I've had a lot of mothers of young women in their teens and early twenties tell me that I nailed Judy's character. I used my own daughter, her friends, and the girls in her Girl Scout troop (I was a leader) as fodder for Judy's character. Many men have told me that they thought Judy was too mean to her mother, but we moms know that that's all part of the process of young women asserting their independence from their mothers.

Tricia Douglas Quite right!!! Now my daughter is 37 and we're best friends. She's unmarried still, much to my secret longings, but has done so much with her life! All we moms ever want is happiness for our children. That is why your book is hitting it on the nail for me.
