No pressure

At just after six this morning I was typing half-awake when an email came in. I have all the bleeps turned off so I can’t be disturbed when I’m writing – but you know how that little ghostly précis comes up in the corner of the screen? It caught my eye – and prompted me to open the message.

It was from Amazon. Would I like to order ‘Murder Mystery Weekend’, the new novel by Bruce Beckham?

Okay – nothing unusual there – that’s just Amazon doing their job, recommending things I might like. Except the thing I’m writing, that I have just interrupted is ‘Murder Mystery Weekend’, by Bruce Beckham.

Jeepers! It comes out in – let me calculate – yes, 36 days!

I wonder – is this Amazon kindly advising everyone who has (hopefully) enjoyed another of the series that the latest is coming soon? Or is it a clever ploy? Do they only send it to me – to chivvy me along?

I had better get back to the book!

Helen Bruce, I get emails from Amazon all the time with "based on your reading" recommendations. "Murder Mystery Weekend" was one of the recommendations a couple of days ago.

Candace I have pre-ordered your up coming book quite awhile ago, so no prompting email on this book. They do send me those notifications though. As you say, no pressure!

Candace I just finished your book! I really liked it. I'm wondering if the character with last name Organ was inspired by the actions of Will and Scarlet? Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I had to giggle when that character entered the book. Looking forward to the next!! Thank you!

Bruce Beckham Hi - thanks for your kind remarks - actually you made me smile, too.

You've probably noticed I have a bit of fun at times with characters' names. For instance the Rest & Be Thankful - a real place, and scene in 'Murder Mystery Weekend' - also appears in 'Kidnapped' by Robert Louis Stevenson - whose protagonist is David Balfour, and sequel 'Catriona' - spookily both characters in my book!

I once interviewed a chap in London called Organ - it's a slightly cheeky surname - probably not an easy one to carry at times - and for some reason it seemed to apposite for the character in question.

Best wishes

Bruce
