Cindy I haven't read an "In Death" novel before but now that I've read the excerpt, I'm sure to pick this one up.

I found a J D Robb book in a used book store in Tulsa OK one day. It was "Holiday in Death".

I didn't know who J D Robb was but the book sounded good. I started reading the first chapter while waiting for my husband to finish his shopping.

I couldn't put it down. I'd NEVER read anything like it before. I had a whole room with shelves that held our books. I was a changed person after finishing that book. I'd never read a police/crime novel before but even then, these stories were more than just murder and gore.

I found the characters to be fully formed, I came to care what happened to them. I looked up J D Robb and found the "In Death" series.

I started buying them up from book 1. It was a year or two before I found out that J D Robb was actually Nora Roberts. That made sense since I also had a couple of shelves of her books too.

I think you will enjoy her In Death stories.

Do you have to read them in order to appreciate the series?

Glamdring Each mystery plot is independant but the life of the main (Eve and Roark) and consistent secondary characters (Peabody, McNab, Mavis, Summerset,...) evolve from book to book. So if you read them in random order, except for very few books were there are references to previous ones, you won't miss anything on the mystery plot but the everyday lives of the main protagonist we'll be out of order.

No, each story is its own. The crime happens and it's solved in that book. There are mentions of characters in other books but you know who they are and Nora explains in the context of their interaction who they are and why they're important.

I will say though, the book that is referred to time and time again is Origin in Death. Anything written after that will often have references to that...I don't mean you can't read anything past it without reading it, that's not it.

In a following book there is a movie, in another book, about the "Icove" case, which is the case in Origin in Death. You don't have to know the story in Origin in Death to be able to follow along but if you haven't read it then you might want to take time to read it first.

That's the only case that is mentioned a lot in the books beyond it. Of course she does say things in future books about events that have happened in past stories but again, it's NOT part of that story's plot, it's more of a normal comment about something in the past.

So no, you don't have to read the books in order at all. It isn't necessary. It's just fun to see her grow and come into the knowledge of her past.

When the story starts she has no memory of her life before she woke up in a hospital in Dallas. As the story moves forward she had memory after memory pop up until way down the line she knows what happened to her. Rourke is her strength and support and her mind can finally deal with it all so it surfaces a tiny bit at a time.

So her character in the first few books is closed off, she has 1 friend, Mavis, and cares for her old partner and mentor, Feany.

Eve grows into a wonderful character that is full bodied and rich. If you don't read the first few novels you might not appreciate how much she has developed over the series. So don't feel you must read them but do read them if you get a chance to.
