Origin of Diwali

The Ramayana is an epic poem attributed to the Sanskrit poet Valmiki. It's in couplets (slokas) using a meter called Anustup. The verses are grouped into sargas, and the sargas are grouped into six books called Kaandas. They detail the life of Rama, whose return from exile forms the basis for the Diwali celebration.
