A Message from Naren Shankar, show runner of The Expanse

I guess now we really all are Belters. A tribe without a country.

I've been on shows that were so awful and so awful to work on, that I would pray for
cancellation (mercifully granted). I've been on shows that had good, long runs,
so when the end came it was okay because we’d said what we wanted to say and
we could go out with some dignity. But I have never been on a show where the
story, the characters, the look, the sound, the audience engagement, the reviews,
everything were clicking like The Expanse. So getting cancelled now, like this...
I'm still trying to put my head around it.

The passion of our fans has been matched only by the passion of the incredibly
talented cast and crew who put their hearts and souls into every episode.
Thank you all for that.

Alcon TV Studios is doing everything they can to find continued life for the series.
In the meantime, keep watching and (hopefully) raving — and making noise. Let
people know what they’ve been missing. We are only halfway through the season and
there is SO MUCH MORE to come. You will not want to miss it.

Tony da Napoli Agreed - one of the very best Sci-fi movies ever produced--TV or big screen. The casting, story-lines, effects, all top notch. We have to keep the series going. It is one of the very few productions I would pay a separate fee to watch. We think it is that good.

Kevin I love the books and the show. I really hope this finds a new home!

message 3: by John (new)

John Rice I've read every book, seen every episode. I'd be quite pleased if this show went on for another 4 or 5 more seasons. Can't say too many good things about this story!

message 4: by Matt (new)

Matt A This is another example of fine production matched with poor distribution. For a show that is set 200 years in the future, I am shocked that their content production model is set 15 years in the past.

Hopefully TE the show is able to find a new home, keep cranking out episodes, and reach the wider audience that is currently fenced off from viewing.

I personally (as one without cable) have had to use a VPN and stream the episodes through other jurisdictions as the only way to view. Not happy that there are so few options to check this out, and I long to see more avenues for viewing in the future of this show. I expect to see this development remain a short-term friction point that spurs a long-term benefit to the franchise.

Tino Tokic I really am not sure how you all thought SyFy would finance the making of the series and only have rights to original airing and not streaming or reruns. It was kind of clear from start this would be an expensive piece of eye candy. Alcon should have had that on their mind before doing such a deal with struggling SyFy

message 6: by Belle (new)

Belle Shen I really love the books and series!!!!! Hope Alcon TV studio can find a way to continue the series!!!

message 7: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Lee This is the best sci-fi show since Battlestar Galactica! Everything about the show is amazing and what I would believe to be realistic. Great plot, multiple storylines, amazing actors, score, effects. Really hope someone else picks this up. This could easily go on for another 3 seasons.

Kelps Leite de Sousa I am so glad and relieved that the show got picked by Amazon. I hope it continues to live through all the books and that many books continue coming. The more the better. I was hopping Netflix would pick the show, as I don't have an Amazon subscription, but Amazon seems to be a better fit for a show of this scale and complexity (and it looks like Jeff Bezos is also a fan).

John Rice Rarely does a television series hold up in entertainment value like the original writing does. I'm 52 yrs old and a complete bookworm as evidenced by the fact that I will read close to 80 new books this year when all is said and done. THE EXPANSE is an exception to this generality. It has been so much a treat for me to wait expectantly all week long (when the season episodes are being aired) to hear CHRISJEN AVARSARALA mouth off to someone or AMOS pummel a bad guy or JIM AND NAOMI'S relationship grow during a new episode. It has given me something all my own that I can look forward to when work gets too imposing or the medical bills are piling up. I am deeply grateful for such a simple pleasure and equally overjoyed and relieved that it has found a new home!

Tony da Napoli Right on, John. the cast, effects, story line... great job. I am like you--can't wait until next week even though I know what happens just because the visuals have been done so well. Avarsarala is my favorite - she nails the role.

message 11: by Paul (new)

Paul this show must go on! thankfully it will!

message 12: by John (last edited Jun 28, 2018 12:47PM) (new)

John It is quite an amazing show and cast! I love Drummer! - Cara Gee is so awesome. Love her voice. Great character. I already have a subscription to Amazon for Harry Bosch and Amazon seems to do a wonderful job with their shows. This weeks season finale was excellent.

message 13: by Mark (new)

Mark Syfy channel (stupid name change, btw) came out with a reason for me to watch the network again, only to abandon the program well before it was out of steam. I would have thought NBCUniversal would invest more money/time but I guess some things never change. Will start reading the books, then watch on Amazon, and delete Syfy from my TV's menu...

message 14: by John (new)

John All about the money. They dont want to spend it.

message 15: by Tony (new)

Tony da Napoli Well, here is my take on book 7/Persepolis
The Shark Jumper?
I have read each book in published order. I am watching the tv series for the second time. I am a fan.
Yet this last book seemed to be lacking the 'feel' of the series. I almost dropped it to two stars as I felt disappointed by it. Not a good sign going forward.

I could not say it was a particular story line or plot or whatever. But when I read the acknowledgements in the back I got a hint to what the issue might be.

There are way too many cooks in the kitchen. Too many hands in creating the book. Success attracts. I think The Corey need to pull away from the hoard of well-wishing 'contributors' and editors and beta readers and write the next book on their own --if it is not too late.

message 16: by John (new)

John Rice I haven't read this one yet, but I've read all the others. I have to say that I didn't understand why they aged the characters and the story line as much as they did. That decision may be playing itself out with this new story. I hope not.

message 17: by Bruce (new)

Bruce The Expanse is the only show I watch on SciFi and it's being cancelled!? Loved every book and thoroughly enjoy the excellent interpretation by all of the actors. Leaves me scratching my head as to what kind of audience the SciFi channel is trying to appeal to.

message 18: by John (new)

John Rice Bruce, it was SAVED!! Amazon.com bought the rights to it, so right now you can buy or rent seasons 1-3 and they are in production of seasons 4+, which you will be able to watch on Amazon. Fear not, belta-loda, your redemption draweth nigh!

Haldoor42 I couldn't agree more! I loved this show and the books it's based on. I hope it finds continued life elsewhere.

YAY! I didn't read this before I commented, but I am so glad I looked again once I had. Thank you for this news!

message 21: by Zaax (new)

Zaax Diamond Makes you wonder about USA TV they get a very good series, with a big fan base, then they cancel it. No wonder people are cutting the cord when they find their favorite programs have moved to the likes of Netflix

message 22: by John (new)

John Rice Does anyone know if they are in “post” on season 4 yet? We’re hungry out here Amazon! When does 4 drop?

message 23: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn I only have basic cable so I only learned of the show from my library that had the 3rd season for check-out. I watched all 3 seasons and was hooked! I've since read some of the books, I'm on book 5, Nemesis Games. I am so happy to hear that they got picked up after Sify cancelled them. I will be looking for the next season at the library again. The series does it so well. A little different from the books but more drama that way. Having planet Iius I hope is not too much a challenge for the show. They did a great job with Abaddon's Gate! I'm going to miss "Miller" but maybe he will still be around? I'm so happy to hear that an eighth book is coming out soon. I hope they can keep the show going that long! I hope the Expanse expands!!

message 24: by John (new)

John Rice Yes! Eight book drops on March 22nd I believe!

Eric Stodolnik Hey guys! HUGE HUGE HUGE fan here! It is seriously possibly my favorite series of all time... not just of Sci-Fi, but in general. For ever, Larry Niven's Known Space was my all-time favorite series... And then I came upon The Expanse. At this moment, I think I have a 3 way tie for my number 1 slot for my favorite series... Larry Niven's Known Space, Stephen King's Dark Tower, and of course, your The Expanse series!!! Its impossible for me to actually pick my all-time favorite out of the 3, but there's a huge chance that if I had a gun pointed at my head, I'd pick The Expanse! You are a huge inspiration to me.

I don't know if you'll ever see this... but I thought hell, wont hurt to try to post a message.

All I wanted to say is PLEASE do a release in the future of all of the novellas compiled together into an anthology!!! Pretty soon you will have completed the entire series when Book 9 comes out! And then... oh man... I'm going to want to cry because there will be no more new books coming out! BUT... I haven't read any of the in-betweener novellas yet. And I know that when i finish Book 9 and the entire series, I will have the blessing of all those novellas as a sort of bonus!

So I thought maybe after you release Book 9, you guys may actually decide it would be good idea to release all the novellas into a single complete volume for us fans that would just love one last chance to live in the world of The Expanse!!!

Pretty please with a cherry on top??? :D

Thanks for considering it if you actually stumble onto this post! Once again, I absolutely LOVE your work!!!

message 28: by Joyce (new)

Joyce Hertzoff Loved, loved loved the new season on Amazon Prime. Now I can't wait for season 5. Guess I'll have to be content with reading the novellas.

message 29: by James (new)

James I loved the show and just read the first novel. I loved the book even more, but I have no complaints about the show, it is wonderful in every way. The novel allows a level of detail not possible in any other medium, and I can't wait to read everything that had been written by the authors. My older son is ahead of me with the reading (for now, cue evil laugh). We are in sync with the show (cue family-wide grins). Thanks, all!

message 30: by Christina (new)

Christina Best sci-fi series ever, in my opinion - the story line, the characters, the effects, all excellent, definitely better than the last Star Wars series in all ways.
