It's been a long week - time for a short read perhaps?

It's been a really long week. Now, not only am I losing one publisher to illness, but I may well lose another to market forces. I feel somewhat "Earnest" with lines like "to lose one [publisher] might be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness" echoing in my brain. But am I really careless or just careworn?

Either way, reading children's picture books is a great prescription. Even without kids to share them with, picture books still lift the spirits, inspire a smile, and...

Siobhain Thanks for your post. I absolutely love picture books! If I ever add all of the ones I have loved to goodreads, I will look like quite the heavy-weight reader based on numbers. I look forward to having grandchildren one day to share the ones I have loved with and to start reading the new ones coming out such as those that you reviewed. Blessings and good luck with your publishers.

I went off picture books as a kid - I think it was a result of taking so long to learn to read. But I delight in them again now.

Yes, I remember feeling frustrated with picture books as a kid. For a young reader and for uninformed parents, picture books look like they should be the first books for kids to read. Some with limited vocabulary and short, easy sentences do work for young readers, but some of the best are meant to be read by a strong reader to a child. I guess that was the beauty of being a parent. Luckily, I read The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease when my oldest was a baby so I eagerly launched in to reading to her and fell in love with the magic of picture books. When she and her siblings started wanting to read books to themselves, we had plenty of books like Hop on Pop on hand. Some of the more advanced picture books worked because we had read them together so many times. Glad that you find delight in picture books now!
