A Stampede

Eating Kung Pao chicken, drinking Negra Modelo, writing "Rydell Tales (a novel)"

And when you read it, you're going to say to yourself, he can't have been eating Kung Pao chicken and drinking Negra Modelo while he wrote this--it is way, way too dark.

But it's true--you can live well and write dark.

Today's image is from a book I ran across in my research: "A Stampede" from: Historical and Biographical Record of the Cattle Industry (1895)

Whenever I see a painting like this, I think about the poor painter, standing there in front of his easel with a paint brush in his hand, thinking, "holy crap, I've got to finish this up quick !"

Raymond Elmo That's either a Remington or a good imitation. We have a lot of his western art in the Museum of Fine Art in Houston. I haven't given a darn about cowboy culture since I was seven; but his paintings are 1) authentic
2) strangely eerie and moving.

He'd have known exactly what was meant by 'live well and write dark'.

Jonathan Remington is great. I saw some of his works a long, long, time ago at the Amon Carter Museum of Fort Worth--I need to take another look--I'd see it in a whole new light now. As far as research is concerned, I've discovered that if you want historical details, painters and law clerks are your best friends.
