Summary

The dawn of airship flight created a second Golden Age for piracy and the world’s strongest imperial power. By 1872, the East India Company has smothered both the smuggling havens of small autonomous states and the livelihood of corsairs. Their military reach deters all but those most determined to prevent the Golden Age from coming to an end.

Nerea once claimed top spot on the Company’s blacklist by targeting trading vessels in the East Indies. Increased military activity now keeps Windrose on the defense, mutual discontent growing between her and the crew. When the engine stalls after escaping a failed plunder, she risks losing more than her ship.

Ketan deserted from the Company after siding with an isolated rebellion of tea plantation workers in his native India. Despite reveling in the command of Grimnir Cross, the consequences of betrayal begin to weigh on him. Aiding the stranded Windrose comes as a welcome distraction.

The Company soon entangles their troubles, both captains becoming desperate to keep their freedom. Even the precarious trust grown between them endangers more than it endeavors to protect—if one goes down, the other may follow at any cost.

Aliferous.

What can I really say that could accurately sum up my emotions for this chapter?

The world building is both fascinating and easy to follow, the writing is engaging and polished while retaining a humble beauty, the main character is easy to root for, and the fighting

airship battle anyone? —

is spectacularly clear.

My only disappointment is that I can’t read the rest yet!
