Five reasons to read Three Times the Lady
1) The amazing but true story: If you don’t already know the story of Judith of Flanders, you are in for a treat – this Frankish princess has a lot to contend with! Marries for the first time in her early teens to a man old enough to be her grandfather; she becomes a crowned queen of Wessex provoking outrage and rebellion from her oldest stepson; she is widowed young; she faces accusations of incest; there is the ever-present threat of Viking invasions; her domineering father is one of the most formidable men of the age; she faces imprisonment; she endures life on the run in a desperate journey across Europe. Will she ever be happy?
2) The characters: As I wrote in A star-studded cast the book is a true Dark Age celeb fest! Charles the Bald, Louis the Stammerer, five, yes five, Wessex kings including a young Alfred the Great, Hincmar of Rheims, Pope Saint Nicholas the Great and Saint Swithun.
3) The settings: Magnificent Frankish palaces, the court of Winchester, Charlemagne’s palace of Aachen and the papal splendour of Rome – this is a whistlestop tour of Dark Age power centres.
4) The Amazon verified reviews:
“Judith is a very likable character and during the tale we can perceive her development of dreamy teenager in a courageous and strong woman, able to face an ambitious and quite repressive father.
“I highly recommend this book! Excellent story! I will definitely read other books from this author! If you are on the fence about buying this book, buy it! I promise you will not be disappointed! Truly one of the best books I have read this year”
There is a real devoutness to history here yet it is still entertaining and pulls at the heart strings. I stayed up well into the night reading, desperate to find out what Judith’s fate was. By the end I still felt so attached to the characters.
And on Goodreads: “Wonderful stuff. I loved Judith” Yes, me too!
5) The price: Buy Three Times the Lady before the 4th April and you will pay just 99c on Amazon.com and 99p on Amazon.co.uk. If you have Kindle Unlimited you can read Judith’s amazing story for free!
