Book review: Jem and the Holograms-Dimensions

.

Since the beginning of the comic book series, I’ve been in love with Jem and the Holograms (to be technical, since I was in first grade). The first 26 issues were fantastic (they had their vanilla moments, but that’s the way it was); the second series, Infinite, was even better (come on, parallel universes!).

When I learned Kelly Thompson wasn’t writing Dimensions, I was skeptical, but then I learned Sophie Campbell was writing the first issue, so I got excited. Seriously, she’s the reason I fell in love with the comic books. Something about the artwork … the characters are so expressive and cute. I’d heard Sophie had written and drawn her own books (why haven’t I read them? I’m stupid, that’s why), so I figured written/drawn by her would be super. It was! However, she only wrote and illustrated the first story.

(For more details about each issue, check the link in my bio)

For the other two series (and The Misfits, so three series), I got notice when they were ending, but for Dimensions, I heard it was ending as I read about it in the final issue. Got to admit, I was relieved.

It wouldn’t be the first time I’d fallen out of love with Jem – my attention wanders vastly between different topics. So I’d get into something else and abandon the series, but within a month or two, I’d be back, filling in whatever issues I missed on eBay.

Maybe because Infinite was so good (love me some sci-fi), this group of short stories didn’t cut it. For most of the issues, it seemed like they were using the characters’ likenesses and vague mannerisms and then doing weird off-topic stuff with them. But because I genuinely liked the first issue (or one story from the first and second issues), I kept plunking my money down.

Kelly Thompson and Jenn St. Onge (who worked together on The Misfits) are coming back this summer with Nancy Drew – another institution from my childhood I could never get enough of. So I’m happy leaving Jem for now. If IDW brings her back later. we’ll see.
