Making Anti-Midterm Memories
For me, the balance between studying and procrastinating often falls heavily on the procrastinating side. I would much rather do anything except plant my Personal Financial Planning book on the desk and try to remember the difference between APR and the FDIC.
Right now college may be my lot in life, but studying is NOT my thing.
I do love to learn. Hours spent discussing 18th century poets or reading up on philosophy are hours well spent.
But I’d rather not re-read Technical Writing class notes or memorize story structures for Journalism. If I understand the concepts, I’d rather not stress out about memorizing every detail.
Three years of college has taught me to navigate midterm time. Whenever the study-hard or fail-hard season approaches, I take one look at the sky-rocketing stress levels of those around me, and I decide to opt out on the 3 a.m. study sessions (as fun as that sounds).
I don’t particularly recommend my no-study, no-stress approach to big exams. Often my A crashes into the B range. But at least I still get some sleep during midterm week.
The thing about having midterms in March is that March is the birthday month for 3 of my best friends. When the choice comes down to bake a birthday cake or cram for a midterm…
I choose cake every time.

I may be paying a few thousand bucks to get a degree, but I’m still going to enjoy my time. So last weekend, midterm weekend, I shopped with my friends and then spent 5 lazy hours baking a beautiful banana cake and some chocolate soufflé.
Sure, I winged a few midterms and ended up with mediocre B’s, but I also ended up with some one-chance-only memories.
As Senior year approaches, I know I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. Studying a bit, praying a lot, and choosing memories-making over midterm-acing.
After my roommate Alessia Flores read this post, she shot her fist in the air and shouted, “Yes, procrastination! You have inspired me to procrastinate, that’s what you wanted right?”
Um…I guess so? Maybe not to procrastinate, but to step away from the stress and fit in some fun.
What do you think? Did you survive midterm week or did you wing it like I did? In the middle of all the busyness and stress, did you choose to make some memories?
