Trembling Trust
I sat in the sanctuary trembling.
The man standing at the pulpit reading the Word was not my pastor. My pastor had fallen into sin, and now all around me people wept. As a church family, we collectively lifted our broken hearts to our holy God and held fast to His unchanging promises on a day when the enemy tried to undo us.
Man may fail me, but God is faithful.
When we do not fear God, we open up our lives to destruction. Fear of man is wrong, but it is healthy to tremble in the presence of a holy God.
To fear God means to
seek His wisdom because we acknowledge our own foolishness apart from His Truth
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” (Proverbs 9:10, ESV).
exalt Him with a humble heart in awe of His goodness and glory
“The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” (Proverbs 15:33)
follow His commands wholeheartedly out of a sincere desire to please Him above all else
“Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalm 34:11-14)
