It seems that 90% of all info being put out by "experts" on marketing for both indie and traditionally published writers champions all forms of social marketing/media. I think most of us recognize the value and its importance, and fully support other writers' efforts to build their own brand and gain recognition from audiences. We're writers - not all of us write for the money involved - for many of us it's about the satisfaction of writing something that gives a reader enjoyment.....I know for me, I've found some excellent authors (and been turned on to some great books) from threads and posts.
Ignore them and keep doing what you're doing.
I also think it's a frustration that a lot of authors share -- even many traditionally published authors whose publishers can't be bothered to help them with marketing. We're entrepreneurs. Nobody has a right to criticize us for promoting our "products"...even if it is just for beer money and the joy of sharing a story we love. :)
Just ignore the naysayers and keep sharing your work! Those people aren't worthy to be your audience anyway.
