Comment of the Day: Phil Koop: DO NEURAL NETS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?: "It will always be a minor irritation to me that these ML black-boxes are called 'algorithms'...



...They're the exact opposite of an algorithm! You kind of know what they're going to do, most of the time, but without a huge amount of analysis you've got no idea how they're going to do it-that's what makes it hard to predict failure modes. It would be more reasonable to call them "homunculi" or, for Jack Vance fans like me, "sandestins." Also, get offa my lawn...
