Does Love at First Sight Really Exist?
I'm inclined to say no, love at first sight doesn't exist. I know, I know, but I write romance novels. But we all know romance novels are filled with idealistic fantasies, right?
The question of love at first sight came up on my Facebook fan page a few weeks ago, and another author on my page, Patricia Esposito, said it best—there's potential at first sight. I really like that word. Potential. But wouldn't it be nice if you just knew, the first time you met someone, that they were The One? Then we wouldn't have to go through all the relationship drama we do with the wrong persons before we find the one we want to spend the rest of our lives with.
Here's what I believe in at first sight:
Lust at first sight. Have you ever met someone you're intensely attracted to? They make your palms sweaty or your heart beat faster, and you want to get to know them (in the Biblical sense) better.
Interest at first sight. It's possible to meet someone for the first time and develop an interest in them because you engage in the same activities, know some of the same people, have the same hobbies, or work in the same industry.
Even though I don't believe in love at first sight, that doesn't mean I don't think two people can have a profound connection when they first meet. But I think it does have to develop over time and grow into love. If it works out after you've been together for a long time, even better—the butterflies in the pit of your stomach when you first met were right on the money.
In The Temptation of a Good Man, when Roarke and Celeste meet, they're instantly attracted to each other. Celeste is a single mother and Roarke is a tenured professor ready to settle down and start a family. They share a love of jazz, and during the course of their evening together, they learn more about each other. They enjoy each other's company, and instead of ending the evening going their separate ways, they wind up in his hotel room. Lust and interest at first sight to the nth degree!
In romance novels, love at first sight is not uncommon. In real life, I think it's highly unlikely. What do you think about love at first sight? Do you believe in it or not? Have you experienced it?

"Please don't say anything to Derrick. I'll stay out of your way. I promise. You won't even know I'm here."
He looked down at her hand, and she followed his gaze to where her fingers wrapped around his arm. She withdrew them with haste. When her eyes found his again, desire shimmied down her spine at the hunger she saw in his.
"That's not what I meant," he said, his voice thick and low. "I can't be near you. You're too much of a temptation. Maybe you can stay away from me, but I don't know if I can keep my hands off of you." He slammed his palms against the door above her shoulders.
Celeste jumped, her eyes widening in shock. Shaken, she pressed back against the hard door to distance herself from him. They were too close, and the instinctive movement did little to protect her from the heat of sexual frustration emanating from his pores.
His chest rose and fell with each deep breath, and a storm brewed in his dark brown eyes. "What are you doing to me?"
The tortured question needed no answer. Even if she'd been obliged to respond, he seized her mouth before she could, and his tongue thrust between her lips. The muscular, dark cords of his arms encircled her waist and held her against his body, crushing her soft curves into each hard contour of his.
