Whose story is it? Getting the viewpoint right

Pauline RowsonWhose story is it? That is a question every writer needs to ask before starting to write a novel. From whose viewpoint are you telling the story? Is it single viewpoint or multiple viewpoint? Is it male or female or a mixture of both? Having too many viewpoints and switching them too often will muddle the story and confuse (and often) annoy the reader because it makes it more difficult for them to get inside the character(s) minds.
