Agni (sharmishtha basu) Talks about Movie and Music 26.2.18 Tracy Chapman

This is another artist I truly admire and respect very much. I remember her first appearance, when her song was shortlisted for Grammy, this shy, reserved singer with her guitar singing “Fast Car”, now honestly I did not understand much of the song, but the very next day, lucky me, I got her cassette and after hearing that song fifty five times in the months to come I could feel its depth.

Being a great admirer I read whenever something was told about her and that only made me a bigger admirer.

She was born on 30th March 1964 in Cleveland, ohio. She was brought up by her single mother, who despite of financial restraints bought her a ukulele when she was three, she began playing guitar and writing songs at eight, and graduated in Anthropology. She signed Elektra records in 1986 and rest is history.

I love the songs of this artist because of their sincere depth, her wisdom shines through her lyrics, sometimes they get too dark, like “across the lines” or “why” but in this world of “music for only entertainment” or “commercial purposes” she stands apart! She speaks through her songs, and in a very clear voice, which non Americans like me can understand, I have heard many rock singers sing about social issues, so do singers like Sting, Bruce Springsteen but the sad thing is their pronunciation is hard to understand, we can only guess what they are talking about! Tracy Chapman or Don Henley are other story, like country singers they speak so clearly that I think everyone can understand them, thus their songs create a lot deeper bond!

If you have not heard her you are missing a terrific artist, do listen to her with open mind! Remember a true artist will speak his/her mind, you don’t have to agree with them to appreciate them!
