A New Look at Harlem's Ballet Trailblazer

'When he joined the New York City Ballet in 1955, Arthur Mitchell quickly became the company's first African-American principal dancer. But it wasn't until 14 years later, after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., that he was inspired to found the performance company that became his life's work: the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Mitchell's long career in ballet, both performing and teaching, is the subject of a new exhibit now open at Columbia University's Wallach Art Gallery: "Arthur Mitchell: Harlem's Ballet Trailblazer."'
