An Unorthodox Proposal (Teaser from TEACHING TREY)

“Send me a bill,” Amber said. “I’ll pay you whatever you’ve put into this so far.”

“Hang on a minute,” Trey said. “I may have a way for you to get what you need for the business.”

Surprise and hope vied inside her. “Really?”

“Teach me to ride a motorcycle,” he said. “In return, I’ll float you a low-interest loan for repairs and handle the legal and landlord issues for you at no charge — if you are willing to sell, at which time I’ll take the usual broker commission.”

She stared at him; was he joking? He didn’t appear to be. “But you could take the motorcycle safety course any time you want.”

“Maybe I’d rather have a more personal experience.”

“I’m no motorcycle instructor,” she said. “I wouldn’t even know where to start.”

“You already did when you took me for a ride the other day,” he said. “Just do what you’ve been doing for—how long?”

“Six years,” she answered absentmindedly.

He smiled. “Besides, I need a little extra help I couldn’t get from a motorcycle safety course.”

“What kind of help?” she asked.

He leaned forward. “Bike shopping.”

“What?”

“And clothes,” he continued. “I need biker clothes.”

“You can’t be serious!”

“Come on,” he said. “It could be fun. And you have to admit, it’s a pretty sweet deal.”

“But…”

“Look, it’s not like I’m making you an indecent proposal.” His eyes glittered with something that looked suspiciously like mischief. “It’s an honest barter. My services for yours.”
