…and then Pete Townsend says, “Can anybody play the drums?”

I was thinking about reinstalling Rock Band again recently, but I decided that, even though I really loved playing it back in the day, I am at a point in my life where I would rather spend that time actually learning an instrument, instead. I have played bass guitar and ukulele in the past. I also played guitar in the way that every lame college dude does, which means I never learned any theory, but I memorized some guitar tabs and chords, and sort of faked my way through a few songs for friends who were either too polite or embarrassed to tell me how bad I was.

I was sort of thinking that doing it as a game would be fun, so I gave Rocksmith guitar a try, but after about two hours of different game modes, it’s not for me. It was like all the frustration of Rock Band or Guitar hero, but without any of the fun of pretending that I was a rock star. I may plug in my old bass guitar (which is now a vintage instrument because I’m old) and try that mode, but for now, I’m going to try something different.

I have always wanted to learn to play the drums, and I was pretty good at the Rock Band drums when we played all the time, so I decided to pick up a small, inexpensive, student kit, and use YouTube videos to master the basics. While I was shopping around about a week ago, there was a shiny little kit on sale at woot, and it had more pieces and cost less than the three piece kit I was looking it, so I bought it. It was delivered today.

I’ve been putting it together, which is really fun, but murder on my old hands and knuckle joints, so I took a break to write this dumb post about the new experimental hobby thingy I’m doing: Is it possible for a 45 year-old dude like me to learn how to play the drums, using only the resources available online?

I intend to find out. I’ll document the process here.

Joni Hall You're never to old to learn something new. That's what keeps us feeling "young" even though we are "old". Take it from me...I'm older than you. Good Luck!

Robert Raplee You really think you're old at 45?

Emmett J. At 45 I thought I was old... ah, to be 45 again. At 45 I was learning how to operate and repair a massive passive sonar system to find and prosecute submarines. But, I knew I wouldn't do drums because I have neither the desire or rhythm. I think one of the keys to success with something like that is to drum with someone. When you team with someone just a little bit better than you, you strive to catch up and they strive to stay ahead and you both win.

Hope Broadway I bet there's a drum teacher out there who'd love to work with you.
But yes, I think you CAN learn something new, even if you are 45. As a 42 year old trying to earn a Masters, I have to hope that us "old dogs" can learn new tricks!

Andy Dude, the internet is more than just a series of tubes - it's a very fine thing indeed! I don't have a D.I.Y bone in my body, and I've taught myself how to change tires, brakes, oil, and all other manly, household tasks. You can do anything if you're analytical enough to teach yourself.

Chris McGrath Why not take lessons?

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Macklem Go you! I've had a bass guitar for about 10 years now with every intention of learning how to play and haven't found the time. I really had a chuckle at how much fun you had putting the drums together - that was always me! I loved getting things that need to be assembled - and would then lose interest (LOL!) - I'm still the one to assemble any bookcases etc...
Can you learn the drums from YouTube? I have faith that you can do anything you put your mind to!

Jennifer At 37, I'm taking my first ever statitstics coursework online. It includes a programming component (not a programmer) and I am learning! Many youtube instructional videos are really good so I have confidence you can learn to play drums. It may be more difficult than it would have been 20 years ago, but don't forget how important it is to your brain health to continue to force it to think in new ways and solve non-routine problems. Plus drummers are hot (my husband was a drummer when we first met.)

message 10: by DeadlyHausfrau (new)

DeadlyHausfrau I used to play piano as a kid... Been thinking about whether I am too old to pick it back up, so I'm interested in your progress.

Amber 45 is not old. If you are 50 and above, that is old. I'm 30 and age is just a number. Plus you're never too old to learn something new. Good luck on learning the drums. Look up where you live at and see if anyone does drum lessons and ask them about it. It doesn't hurt to ask.
