In spite of the painful impact of two personal tragedies, I would have to say that I had a dreamworld childhood. I grew up in a community transitioning from its farming heritage where vestiges of the open America landscape still survived unscathed.
On one side of our little street, I had access to the wonders and stimulation of a burgeoning state university while to the West I had endless woods and fields filled with wildlife and a great river to meander along with my dog. I found peace in silence. I adore silence. I can sit for hours in a wood listening to the trees softly sing the praises of the Lord of creation.
You could say that half of me grew up off the grid. The better half. I do not like being attached to the grid by today's nagging umbilical cord. My flip phone sleeps in the glove box of my car in the off position in case of emergency. Some days, I turn it on to check my voice mail. Most days, I do not. My family knows how to find me.
In today's headlines, two of Apple's biggest shareholders are now urging the company to address children's addiction to the company's flagship product as well as its effect on mental health.

I'm glad there are still people who like living "off the grid", and find in Nature plenty of wonder. The vanishing minority, though.
