What 2017 Taught Me

Though this year was a drop-dead shitty one for politics and, y’know, social justice, personally I feel like my family leveled up. One of the things of which I’m most proud was our participation in the super massive Women’s March L.A.

You guys might know from my old web series Discussing News With My Kids, that we… well, discuss news with our kids. So our boys knew what they were marching for, they know what’s going on in D.C. and beyond. They give a shit.

And at home, I’ve tried to live by that old Gandhi quote “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” So in addition to being more involved in the political events, I’ve tried to be a better person in general:

Less blame, more forgiveness;Less complaining, more action;Less fear, more art;Less flight, more fight.

And it’s paid off. This year I achieved some pretty cool professional goals, including book deal #4 (it’s a political book… more about that next year), I have a better outlook, and I genuinely feel like a better father.

I plan to go into 2018 fists up and ready to fight. Because if this year taught me anything it’s that being a better citizen makes me a better dad. Fighting for human rights and living that ideal benefits not just the oppressed, but everyone, especially my kids.

So to the career politicians in Washington who seek to do this country and its citizens harm…

Because I’m a citizen, my wife is a citizen, my kids are citizens. And this fight has just begun.

Happy fucking New Year, everyone.
