Motivation Monday: The Writer Always Wins

Hello My Writing Warriors!

As another Monday dawns, and we head back to work with the holiday season in full swing, I think it is important that we reflect on where we are, where we are going, and where we want to be.

So on one of these last Blue Mondays of the year 2017, for our Motivation Monday let’s stop and remind ourselves of why we are writers in the first place.

Why do we suffer so much? Why do we bleed? Let’s face it there’s got to be an easier way to make a living than being a professional writer. I can think of half a dozen jobs right now off the top of my head that are less taxing than writing. Judo Instructor? Highway Toll Collector? Aquarium Cleaner?

I envy anyone who works with their hands, who makes a living with their bodies. Dancing. To be paid to dance is to me the dream job, but then I’m looking at it as an amateur. It is always a different proposition for the professional. I’m sure there are many highly successful professional dancers who are miserable out of their souls. Oh well. I digress.

But let’s remind ourselves of one important fact that all writers should tattoo on their knuckles. Here it is.

The Writer Always Wins.

Maybe not at first. Maybe not after a long bloody haul through the night, but eventually you can be sure that the Writer will win in the end.

Think about it, and this is why I believe that writing well, expressing yourself clearly and succinctly in your unique voice on the page is the essential skill to master for the 21st Century. Especially in this age of Social Media Overload, it is even more important that someone cares for and respects the written word. Simply put, If you can rock it on the page then someone will gladly pay.

In fact, of all the arts, it is the writer that has the potential for the greatest career longevity. I imagine Stephen King will keep writing until he keels over. You can even start writing later in life which is what I did. I didn’t embark on my whole writing adventure until I was 35. Very few actors, musicians, or dancers can start their careers at 35.

Another reason why the writer always wins is that writing is so portable. Especially these days. You can download everything to your Kindle or Nook or Tablet. Soon we will have the internet in our bodies and I am looking forward to the day when I can share a fist bump with a librarian and get all the classics ever written wired right into my brain. What an age we live in. This is truly one of the best times to be a writer in the history of maybe ever. Not since the printing press was invented have we seen such an age.

So how do we win as writers? How do we play the game not just to survive but to thrive? Well, that is a question for another day and one I will be sure to address in a future JFW!

Until Next Time my Writing Warriors!
