Why scams?

Why a book on cons?

Reason number one: it happens a lot. To people just like us. More than 30 million Americans a year fall victim to fraud. No one thinks it can happen to them, but Americans are 40 times more likely to be defrauded than to have their cars stolen or their homes burgled.

Reason number two: we have a unique perspective. My co-author is deception expert James Munton. With a background as a professional magician, he continues a long tradition of magicians exposing phonies (remember Harry Houdini and the fake psychics?).

Reason number three: cons are fascinating. In the book, we read about Nancy, the army mother who receives a dreaded late-night phone call. We find out how a 25th high school reunion can go horribly wrong. There’s the lawyer trying to save money for his wedding, the woman who receives a unique offer in the grocery store, the college student who can’t rent an apartment. These are everyday people caught up in horrifying circumstances.

And the final and most important reason: if spotted in time, the vast majority of scams are avoidable. We know people who have been scammed. We understand how devastating it can be, and we want to do all we can to help people protect themselves.
