As a folklorist, this kind of thing bothers the hell out of me. So much of what people think of as ancient is Victorian era or newer. Or just wildly inaccurate, really.

WOW, thanks for this thread! 1) i very much appreciate the careful discernment between what people think now, how we conceptualize things, vs how people thought and conceptualized at various times in the past, and 2) i find it fascinating to look at how and why that changes.

TBH, I’d like to know what Ronald Hutton says about this.  He’s the actual scholar and has devoted his career to researching the roots of modern paganism.
